CT-N State Civics Toolbox - Teachers' Notes

How to Read a Bill html | pdf (125k)
The CT-N State Civics Toolbox offers a variety of supplemental information for teachers to use with the lesson plans and activities. Bill information is just one extra piece of information that helps students gain a deeper insight into the legislative process. The How to Read a Bill page is provided to help teachers fully utilize the bill information for classroom instruction by understanding the components of a bill.

Additional CT-N Videotaped Debates
CT-N maintains an archive of Connecticut General Assembly sessions of both the House of Representatives and the Senate since March of 1999. If you are interested in using other videotaped debates in your classroom in addition to the debates listed on our Hot Topics page, you can visit the Connecticut General Assembly website and search for bills and public acts that have been debated on each chamber’s respective floors. Contact Paul Skaff if you need assistance.

Further Research
The CT-N videotaped debates offered in the Toolbox reflect the debate over issues brought before the General Assembly. Such debates are only part of a sometimes long legislative process that a bill undergoes to either be enacted or die somewhere along the way. That process can be summarized and viewed in our How a Bill Becomes a Law slide show. Additionally, for more detailed reports and background information of the issues offered in the Toolbox, visit the Office of Legislative Research. If you want to track the bill through the legislative process, use the search options on the Connecticut General Assembly website.
