Substitute for SB 825: An Act Concerning Paintball Safety
House of Representatives - May 26, 2009
Length: 11 min

This bill would require kids under 18 to attend a safety course prior to using a paintball gun at a paintball facility, and would also require the use of protective eyewear when playing paintball on any public or private property. Proponents believe this is a good step towards enhanced safety, while opposition to the bill is expressed over the limited rights of the private property owner should a civil lawsuit be raised as a result of contributory negligence.

Substitute for HB 6565: An Act Concerning A Policy Regarding Dissection In Classrooms
House of Representatives - April 22, 2009
Length: 12 min

This bill would allow students to raise conscientious objections to participating in dissection of animal specimens in school. Proponents of the bill offer alternative instructional computer model examples which would meet course requirements, but opponents to the bill believe this would be disruptive to the class and allow for students who are simply "grossed-out" to take advantage of the law.

Substitute for SB 760: An Act Concerning School Crisis Response Drills And Fire Drills
House of Representatives - May 29, 2009
Length: 18 min

This change to existing law would require schools to hold a crisis response drill at least every three months and to conduct a fire drill no later than 30 days after the commencement of the school year. Proponents of the bill believe that this only enhances the safety of our children while on school grounds and is needed in the wake of incidents around the country. Opponents do not think that the new language is needed nor do opponents want to impose additional state mandates on local boards of education.
